In Oakland’s Lakeshore neighborhood, the owners of this beautifully preserved craftsman home full of original gumwood built-ins and base-boards wanted to carry that aesthetic to a new conversion of a basement into a den and full bath. The former unfinished storage space was excavated and expanded with new windows, doors and stairwell and the result is a seamless part of the home, complete with built-ins and baseboards to match the upstairs. While gumwood is not available readily today, we worked with the contractor on species and stains to get the closest match. The built-in desk provides a cozy simple space, and the bathroom has a more modern look with handmade details at the vanity and tile.
